How to fill the App Store keyword field.

The keyword field is 100 characters that users never see and Apple searches on every query. Used well, it can double the searches your app shows up for. These are the rules that matter.

1. Separate with commas, no spaces

Write "habit, tracker, routine, goals", not "habit, tracker, routine, goals". The spaces cost you three characters here and more in a full field.

2. Never repeat a word

Apple combines words from your name, subtitle and keyword field. If "tracker" is in your subtitle, it does nothing in the keyword field. Each word only needs to appear once across all three.

3. Use single words, not phrases

Apple matches "habit tracker" if you have "habit" and "tracker" anywhere in the indexed fields. Writing the phrase adds nothing but the extra characters.

4. Skip what Apple adds for you

Some words are wasted in the keyword field:

  • Your app name and your company name
  • The category name, and the word "app"
  • Plurals when you already have the singular, in English
  • Competitor brand names, which can get your update rejected

5. Localize per market

Every locale has its own keyword field, and some storefronts index more than one locale. The US storefront, for example, also searches the Spanish (Mexico) listing, which gives you another 100 characters for English-speaking users.

Translate keywords by what people search in each market, not word by word.

6. Measure, then change

Track your rank for each keyword for a few weeks after an update. Keep the words that brought you into the top results and replace the ones that did not.

Questions

Should I put spaces after commas in App Store keywords?

No. Spaces count toward the 100-character limit and do not help matching.

Can I use competitor names as App Store keywords?

You should not. Apple's guidelines forbid trademarked terms you do not own in metadata, and reviewers can reject the version.

Does the order of keywords matter?

No. Apple treats the field as a set of words. Order does not change ranking.
